Wad'ya mean What?

Oh, right. You want to know what this is all about. Pretty much this is my idea to spawn ideas - and then do something with them. My overall goal would be to get a community of people that share my goals of making something from where there once was nothing. To get going in that direction, I am KICk starting this project by getting a nice, useable front end up and running that will server my purposes both now and into the future. I have been part of a development team working on a homebrew CMS system - and decided it was time to start incorporating the good ideas from that project into smaller scaled projects(mostly the basic concepts of reducing the required maintenance to keep a resource such as a website up to date).

Here. Among the lovely, intertwined, interwebs...

The motivation behind this is to provide the resources and a vehile to connect people with good ideas in a way that will lead to positive outcomes for everyone. Once up and running, I see my role shifting to a more of a moderation role(quality assurance - making sure it is not taken off course too far) and allowing the community to guide the direction it will take.

Pretty much, I want this resource to be everything and more that I wish I could of had when I was first trying to figure everything out. So to that end, I am planning on developing 3 core areas for this web site. The first is the Knowledge base. I want to have as much useful information as I can get created and placed here so that I can feel comfortable giving new conscripts a set of tools that I know will help them in figuring out how to attack a particular task. I also know and understand the value of Teaching a concept to someone else - as this is(IMHO) the surest way to really solidify any concept you are trying to wrap your brain around(so long as there is someone in the know keeping an eye on things so they don't get to far out of hand).

Now. Or as we programmer types often hear it, yesterday.

Content isn't enough though. There needs to be active participation that is leading people somewhere - and to do this, it really needs to serves some useful purpose. I look at all of the "social networking" websites out there and can only wonder what it would have been like if in addition to connecting so many people, they were providing some kind of meaningful opportunity to become involved with. Seems to me like that would be a better way to build lasting connections than just <insert random funny/outragous/deep/morbid/embarrassing quote/photo/movie/song> here. It would make tons more sense if in addition to connectiong people there was some instantly available and useful task that could somehow weild and combine all that brain power into a constuctive, creative force.

(In case you missed it, this was the call to action - yes you! Get involved! Do something constructive while you crawl through your social networks.)

You didn't think I would spill everything before I even got myself up and running did you?

Now you got me rambling. But thought 2 is that the content creation and development would be geared to engaging others and giving them an easy way to participate. This is what education should be about(again, if students were put to some useful/meaningful task rather than <insert bs/excuse/pointless/mind-numbing assignment/project/test/quiz/paper> here. Again, either having someone teach it or decide to learn it is going to give far better results than trying to push on young pupils things that will only bore and distract an otherwise healthy and developing mind. Again, there is a crying need for something of value to be made available to more than those that have assets available to pursue them. The Internet can and should be that - we just need to start making it more attractive and easy for fulfilling that purpose.

I guess it is time to draw this rant to a close, but finally, the biggest and most impacting gains happen when you get the right kind of feedback and the right moment. The final objective of this project is to provide a user with the ability to take in suggestions from external people and immediately have a good idea of what is worth chasing down. In my head, I see this as a kind of reputation system. Alot like leader boards in video games, but without the emphasis on pointless "grinding" so to speak. The ranking need to be based on many users, and the weight of each persons vote should also be tied to what the rest of the community thinks of them as a whole. And, yes I do have some general plans that show some promise on how this could be implemented in a volatile enviornment such as the what the interWebs provide us with. Stay tuned if you are interested, because it will be a invite only process(seems to be the most logical way to hold back the hordes of would be abusers). In essence, prove a way to share ideas between people in a way that simultaneously protects and assists with the community's efforts as a whole.

Why KIC?

Oh, you want the marketing lingo to convince you this isn't just another line of crap being spoon fed to you straigt from the source by one who wants nothing more than to take anything and everything you are willing to part with and move onto the next victim... well, that is not my style. But here you go, the short and sweet book-jacket version of what the fuss is all about.

Information inspires new, revolutionary ideas. Ideas develop and mature by sharing them. Sharing ideas leads to broader, more established and useful information. Mature ideas become successful products. Successful products get used and are passed along. Things that are shared have a tendency to grow and find new applications of use. The Infusion of new ideas into a good design further increases its usefulness.

Knowledge leads to Innovation. Great inventions come from the Collaboration of many great minds. Increased Knowledge sparks new ideas. And the cycle continues.
